HELP NEEDED: If you live near or in the Boston area, we need your help! COVID-19 has caused an increase in occupancy on Mass Ave. and near the Boston Public Library, and we are in need of volunteers. If you or anyone you know could cook meals and/or deliver them to these locations, please contact Andrew Vittiglio by email ([email protected]) or text (781-786-1003) for more details.
In response to Boston's food shortage for the homeless and the Heroin use issues taking over lives, SuSTEMable teamed up with Eve Abraha, a Tufts University student, in a program designed to help those in need especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Every Sunday, starting in early August, SuSTEMable volunteers home cook 50-100 well-balanced meals and deliver them to the homebound in Boston in biodegradable and eco-friendly containers. We specifically deliver to people on Massachusetts Avenue, right outside the Boston Medical Center, an area locally know as "Methadone Mile". Heroin is a major issue there. What our volunteers feel strongly about is nourishing those who need help in the moment. Yes, it would be best to stop these addictions at the source, but we cannot ignore the reality that these people are struggling, and that some depend on our food to live to next week.

The bustling strip of road is hard to walk down. There are always people sitting on curbs between parked cars, openly cooking and injecting heroin. They are unfazed that we're walking by. But as we have made more and more trips to the area, we have grown to hear peoples stories and understand their situations. Two big problems in the area, besides the most obvious Opioid Epidemic, are lack of food and mass amounts of littering. The amount of water bottles, plastic containers, and needles that are piled up in corners or thrown on the sidewalk is undeniably disastrous. We saw an opportunity to help out. All meals and containers are paid for out of pocket. Overtime, we have been able to get the cost of each meal down to $0.50!
A special thanks to Charles Kirby for his volunteer efforts especially during the COVID-19 deliveries.
